wide-ranging wintering Olive-sideds; reporting birds on private property redux
By – 5:51 am
Very interesting presumed long-distance wanderings by our winter Olive-sided Flycatchers. The December 2021 bird in the Harmony Grove / Elfin Forest / w. Escondido area was serendipitously found a full 2 miles away on the CBC from where it had been seen earlier in the month! And now we have what must be a returning bird from last year in the UTC area seen yesterday by Charley H. about two miles from where Paul C. saw it a few days earlier on 4 Feb well to the east. Given the extreme rarity of winter Olive-sideds in California and the USA, having just single wide-ranging birds makes more sense than there being multiple birds, although obviously this is difficult to fully prove.A couple months ago I posted a message about our widely reporting birds seen on private or otherwise ‘sensitive’ property with exact location information via the listserv or via eBird. Just in the past week there have been several eBird submissions with lat-long locations down to about 12 decimal points (false precision, but that’s another topic of discussion….) ! In two of these most recent examples the site was a signed private HOA park. PLEASE think twice about potentially turning loose lots of birders and photographers to such areas with potentially restricted access. For many of these locations, a FEW birders is often (but not always) OK, but too many visitors with cameras and binoculars, and for too long a period of time, can cause permanent negative repercussions.–Paul Lehman, San Diego
