White-throated sparrow – Ramona

White-throated sparrow – Ramona
By – 11:27 am
This morning I birded at Dos Picos county park in Ramona. The water level in the pond is very low, giving access to sets of reeds that would otherwise be flooded. I found a White-throated Sparrow in the reeds on the north side of the pond (near the wedding gazebo), along with a couple of Golden-crowned Sparrows. On the south side of the pond I found a mixed flock of Fox Sparrows and Hermit Thrushes – at least 16 individual birds. I felt there were at least 12 Fox Sparrows – the most I have ever seen together. Several looked to be the Thick-billed type, but there was at least one Sooty in the group. I also thought I was seeing Slate-colored. The birds were moving back and forth across the trail from low brush to the reeds and back. These birds had no interest in being photographed. In other news – the Bald Eagle was sitting above the nest at about 10 am on Rangeland Rd. For those who haven’t heard, the eagle’s nest was mostly destroyed in a wind gust on Nov 21 and we are watching to see any effort to rebuild. https://ebird.org/checklist/S98249433  Nancy ChristensenRamona
