Two Green-tailed Towhee’s, Cactus Wren, Pacific Golden-plover – TRV South McCoy Trail

Two Green-tailed Towhee’s, Cactus Wren, Pacific Golden-plover – TRV South McCoy Trail

By {authorlink} – 2:44 pm

This morning, Geoff Veith and I checked out the South McCoy trail from the end of 5th Street. Close to the fence about half way down the fenceline separating the trail from the restricted airfield was a Pacific Golden-plover in with a dozen or so Black-bellied Plovers. Before we could get photos, it flew east to the edge of the tarmac, still visible and identifiable through the scope but too far for photos. This is likely one of the two I had there last week that was with a 100+ Killdeer (and no BBPLs). Hopefully, one (or both) stick around.

On the trail, going away from the fence over towards the river lookout, Geoff heard and then spotted a Cactus Wren – on top of a cactus. Nice find close to the coast. Again, hopefully it sticks around.

Heading north on the trail that is a ways west of, but parallel to, the fenceline, we found TWO Green-tailed Towhee’s together. They started off on either side of the trail but ended up in the same bush; the same exact bush where I found one last week. The bush is at the trail intersection 100 ft north of the hotspot marker.
