THREE Lesser Black-backed Gulls
Around 9:00 a.m. Monday morning, there were THREE first-cycle Lesser Black-backed Gulls visible in the same binocular field standing on the left-hand dock at the boat launch at Lower Otay Lake. A half hour later I’d lost track of two of them, with the third bird now swimming in the water off the dock. Also two first-cycle Thayer’s Iceland Gulls. Most gulls were well out in the lake, swimming around, and totaled around 650 in all. Numbers of Herring Gulls were much reduced from a month ago and probably totaled about 25. Also a continuing pair of Common Goldeneyes.
Earlier in the morning, the Snow Goose and five Cackling Geese, and eight Greater White-fronted geese all continued at the upper end of Sweetwater Reservoir, whereas in view from the lower end was a total of 230 Barn Swallows, a high winter count.
