this week’s miscellanea

10:01 am

This past week’s minor rarities included Aug 9th continuing adult and fully-fledged juvenile Harris’s Hawks at Jacumba, an Aug 10th continuing adult Neotropic Cormorant at dawn at the top end of Sweetwater Reservoir, with a Yellow-headed Blackbird near the bottom end, and an Aug 8th splotchy male Summer Tanager at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery. Up to 27 summering Surf Scoters continue near the mouth of San Diego Bay. The first-of-season migrant Willow Flycatcher was on-time at Jacumba on 9 Aug, where also 2 female/immature Vermilion Flycatchers. Migrants on outer Point Loma have been dominated by Western Kingbirds, Bullock’s Orioles, Western Tanagers, and Black-headed Grosbeaks–all typical for the second week of August. Juvenile shorebird arrival seems somewhat delayed and slow so far this month, although numbers seem finally up a bit today (Aug 11).
