Sweetwater Reservoir, and more on the White-fronted goose glut

Following yet more and more flocks of Greater White-fronted geese all over the place, there is currently an exact count of 140 at the upper end of Sweetwater Reservoir, Friday, perhaps a new high count. Also 12 Cackling geese with them, which are slightly early but there already has been a couple sightings in the last couple days elsewhere in the county, not counting the tame bird at Lake Murray that is!! A couple people in the know have floated the theory that this unprecedented coastal invasion of white-fronts and associated cacklings may be associated with either less rice planting in the Central Valley currently due to water shortages and/or one or two major stopover sites on their migration route being dry. Also at Sweetwater this morning there are at least 50 Blue-winged teal, which isn’t all that surprising for October, as well as adult bald eagle and three Wilsons snipe and lots of barn swallows with one late Northern rough-winged.Paul Lehman, San DiegoSent from the all new AOL app for Android
