Swainson’s Hawks This Evening in Borrego Springs
Swainson’s Hawks This Evening in Borrego Springs
By {authorlink} – 8:25 pm
Once again we had over 500 hawks descend into the Date Farm this evening (Tuesday April 18). It’s becoming a nightly event. At 7:20pm hawks began to show up. By 7:40pm hundreds of hawks began to descend from a height. Tomorrow many of the hawks will most likely go to fields along Di Giorgio Rd to feed on grasshoppers before kettling up to continue migrating north. Some of the hawks will linger for another day before departing. I believe that we will again see a few hundred hawks leave and a few hundred remain in town. Also, new hawks from the south will arrive in the evening to join those already in town. The wind tomorrow may stimulate hawks to depart early tomorrow. Wind to 10mph is predicted at 8am tomorrow. Best viewing is probably from Borrego Valley Rd, 1.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive. You may check in at the day count site on Di Giorgio Rd at 8am for more information. Drive from Palm Canyon Drive north, checking the open fields to the east for hawks. The official count site is located 2.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive on Di Giorgio Rd.
