Swainson’s Hawks in Borrego Springs-April 15/16/2023

Swainson’s Hawks in Borrego Springs-April 15/16/2023

By {authorlink} – 8:31 pm

Yesterday April 15, we counted 351 Swainson’s Hawks and 13 Turkey Vultures migrating from Borrego Springs. Today Sunday April 16 we had a Swainson’s Hawk surprise! Yesterday evening we counted only 3 Swainson’s. We remained at the evening site until 7:40pm. This morning Swainson’s Hawks were in several fields and lined up on dead tamarisk trees along Di Giorgio Rd. At least 75 hawks could be observed from the count site. We were surrounded! Today we counted a total of 665 Swainson’s Hawks. Several kettles formed and hawks streamed through Coyote Canyon. With an abundance of grasshoppers still available, we anticipate more hawks. Our total count for season to date is 14,660 Raptors, including 14,115 Swainson’s  Hawks; 541 Turkey Vultures and a few of other species (Check out HMANA.org for details).

ALERT: This evening at 7:15pm we had an arrival of at least 400-600 Swainson’s Hawks! Tomorrow migration between 7:30 and 8:30am should be spectacular. Check in at the day count site 2.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive on Di Giorgio Rd for best viewing. Hawks may go to fields to eat grasshoppers.
