Swainson’s Hawks in Borrego Springs-1,000 Plus Hawks

By {authorlink} – 8:36 pm

Today 644 Swainson’s Hawks migrated NW from Borrego Springs.

This evening (Wednesday April 5) we had a major event. After chasing very high hawks, they began to flow into the Date Farm on Borrego Valley Rd. The hawks were still descending at 7:20PM. A conservative estimate of 1,000+ are in the Date Farm and adjacent trees. Tomorrow with a light wind the hawks will probably go to ground west of the Date Farm to feed on grasshoppers. They often leave roost sites at first light. If they migrate tomorrow it will be after 8:30am. Best viewing early will probably be from DiGiorgio Rd near the intersection of Big Horn. The feeding fields are to the east of DiGiorgio. Do not enter the fields. If you are out early you might see the hawks leave the roosting sites from Borrego Valley Rd. I’ll be out at first light. Of course the hawks could move to other feeding sites (the old potato fields). It is possible that more hawks are located a few miles from the Date Farm at an old potato field. We have now counted 8,417 migrating Swainson’s Hawks this season.
