Swainson’s Hawks and Turkey Vultures-Borrego Springs

Swainson’s Hawks and Turkey Vultures-Borrego Springs

By {authorlink} – 12:45 pm

Today (Wednesday January 4), 110 Swainson’s Hawks and 120 Turkey Vultures migrated south at 10am. When the hawks and vultures entered Borrego Valley yesterday afternoon we speculated whether they were late fall migrants flying south, or very early spring migrants flying north. Evidently the raptors were very late leaving nesting sites to the north. Several kettles formed this morning and the migration path was south. We now have over 400 folks on the ALERT list (when we have over 100 Swainson’s Hawks roosting in Borrego Springs, a message goes out). If you want to be on the list, contact me at Raptorhal3@…. Additionally brochures and information about the hawkwatch can be picked up at Anza Borrego Natural History Association, our sponsor. Each evening beginning February 21 we will begin to monitor incoming Swainson’s Hawks (Borrego Springs is a major stopover site as the hawks migrate north) Around mid March we have counted over 1,000 Swainson’s Hawks entering Borrego Valley. If we have a flower bloom and White-lined Sphinx moths  the number of hawks feeding the valley can be very high. The current rain and more on the way suggests that we could possibly have a bloom this season.
