Swainson’s Hawk Migration Today, Borrego Springs

By {authorlink} – 7:58 pm

At 8:47am (April 6),  Swainson’s hawks in two fields began to kettle up. Twelve kettles formed with 200 hawks in a few of them. The final count was 1,244 Swainson’s Hawks. The total number of Swainson’s Hawks observed migrating from Borrego Springs this season is now 9,661. Only one year has surpassed this number (11,690, in 2017).
This evening (April 6) we observed a large kettle of Swainson’s hawks stream into the date farm at 7:20pm. Additionally we counted 25 in a field near DiGiorgio Rd and 95 in the potato fields. We have approximately 250-300 hawks in town. Tomorrow with a light wind the hawks will begin to migrate between 8:30 and 9am. Some may go into the fields to feed on grasshoppers. Best viewing is from the evening watch 1.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive on Borrego Valley Rd. and 2 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive on DiGiorgio Rd.
