sort-of Big Days

San Diego area birders, if not interested in ‘day listing', you may not be interested in this:

But for any who may be interested: in Jan last year, I went and did a local sort-of Big Day – from 7:00 to 5:00, I went by bicycle around Mission Bay Park and looked for birds. I thought 90 species was a reasonable goal, and was slightly annoyed at getting 89. I went out again yesterday for another try, and was pleased to find 94 species.

Just thought I'd throw this out there as a sort of ‘friendly challenge’ (especially to you birders out there younger than my 58 years): is my 94 beatable? Probably. How about reaching the century-mark? I think that might be VERY difficult, but, with a good-fortune day, just maybe…? My challenge is mainly for the month of January, would make for good ‘apples-to-apples' comparison and friendly competition. But perhaps other winter months are fair game, also.

I invite emails back, for anyone interested and who may have questions regarding any details, thanks for your attention, folks, and as always,

Good Birding :-)
