Sonny Bono NWR bird report

Sonny Bono NWR bird report

I just wanted to let people know about our experience today at the south end of the Salton Sea in case anyone is thinking of going over this weekend.  The visitors center was locked down and the ranger/caretakers were gone and appeared to have been gone for awhile.  All the feeders were completely empty and no seed was on the ground.  Hence there were hardly any birds at all.  About 5 white-crowns and the same House Sparrows, four quail, a few Abert’s and various doves in low numbers.  A couple of Verdin and Mockingbirds and Kestrels.  We were there an hour and that is about all there was.  No Harris’s Sparrow.  In the field you could hear Meadowlarks but that was about it other than a couple of Great Egret.  So we went to Obsidian Point.  No birds could be seen on the water at all.  There were a handful of shorebirds and that was it.  So we went to Unit 1 and although there were good numbers of birds it was nothing like the amount that was there a couple months ago.  They have started to burn the cattails by the platform which opens it up so you can see things but there wasn’t anything to see.Alison HiersCarlsbad
