Singing Hermit Thrush and nesting Juncos in Encinitas

5:50 am

In my yard in Encinitas Tuesday morning a Hermit Thrush was singing its full-length flute-like song that went on for several minutes.  Very magical and unexpected since one of my field guides reports that it’s seldom heard except of its breeding ground.

On March 7th I witnessed a pair of Dark-eyed Juncos in a scruffy, grassy area where the female was collecting small pieces of dried grass with the male close by vocalizing some and foraging.  The female returned twice for more dried grass without the male.
