Semipalmated Sandpiper and Brown Creeper
8:58 am
Wednesday morning there is a juvenile semipalmated sandpiper with Westerns and semi plovers on the easternmost mud flat at Robb field in the river channel opposite the skateboard park. Identify based on plumage. The bill is medium to slightly longish in the semi range, but straight, and the upper parts are totally uniform brownish without any rufous tones, also very clean breasted. Did not see the lesser yellowlegs. Earlier in the morning we found a Brown Creeper at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, a very rare visitor to the coast and likely the all-time earliest arrival date in fall, with the previous earliest being around 13 August back in the 70s and ’80s.
