Program: Flycatcher ID Made Accessible: from Empids to Kingbirds

Flycatchers are notoriously difficult to identify. Join author Cin-Ty Lee and illustrator Andrew Birch of the new Princeton Field Guide series to North American Flycatchers – Volume 1 focused on Empidonax flycatchers was published in 2023, and Volume 2 on Myiarchus flycatchers and kingbirds has just been released in 2024!

Cin-Ty and Andy will go over the basics of flycatcher identification and teach you how to look and listen to flycatchers. The talk will have elements useful to both advanced and beginning birders.

Cin-Ty Lee was born in Taiwan, but grew up and started birding in Riverside in southern California. He is currently a professor of geology at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he has been for two decades. He spends his spare time with birds, photographing them and recording their sounds. Together with Andy Birch, he has written a number of articles on challenging bird identifications.

Andy is a lifelong birder that originally hails from the UK. He has been living in Los Angeles for the past 30 years. He has illustrated numerous identification articles and books both in North America and Europe. He has recently completed work on Flycatchers of North America by Princeton University Press. Vol. 1 empidonax and Pewees was published last year and Vol. 2 myiarchus and Kingbirds was published in April 2024.
