SD Bay White-winged Scoter, and offshore Nine-Mile Bank

2:03 pm

A boat ride out San Diego Bay to the Nine-Mile Bank on Tuesday the 14th produced a (immature) female White-winged Scoter near the mouth of the bay, between the bait docks and the Navy refueling facility–with Surf Scoters. Best to check this area from a boat, but one can also do it with a scope from a fairly long distance from Fort Rosecrans Cemetery. Also a first-cycle Glauocus-winged Gull at the bait docks. Offshore, there were good numbers of Cassin’s Auklets (235) and Red Phalaropes (90). Also 7 Northern Fulmars, 4 Brown Boobies, 2 Pink-footed & 3 Sooty Shearwaters, and 135 Bonaparte’s Gulls–among other more common species.
Late yesterday, there was a pretty White-throated Sparrow on private property in Tierrasanta.
