A male Scott’s Oriole has been hanging around my neighborhood on Mussey Grade in Ramona for about 2 weeks. I had assumed it was a post-breeding bird that had left the desert. Today I was surprised to have a female Scott’s visit the feeders. Then a second female-type shows up. The breast markings are different on the two birds. Finally a fledgling came in and the the female with a black blotch on her breast fed it repeatedly. This young bird doesn’t’t fly well and does not seem to be able to self-feed. I have to assume the Scott’s have nested nearby. A pair nested here several years ago as well.
