San Elijo Lagoon: (3)!? Eurasian Wigeons, Red Phalarope (1/11/2024)

12:45 pm

There were 3 apparent male Eurasian Wigeons in the Central Basin today (1/11/2024). I say apparent because while they looked to be “pure” from my viewing distance, closer inspection could reveal otherwise, however I saw no red flags. Heads looked clean and no obvious salmon coloring mixing with gray flanks. One individual was back by I-5, and to my surprise two were foraging close to another (poorly phone-scoped together) in the channel nearest Manchester between visitors center and freeway. I was able to confirm 3 individuals by seeing them in one scan.

If people have photo’d the reported male, maybe we can see if different birds were actually being photo’d.

The mouth of the lagoon is closed and water is very high in the lagoon. With that there is exceptional viewing of waterfowl throughout central basin from different areas of the bluff when parking at Rios ave.

Lastly there was a Red Phalarope in the West Basin between RR tracks and coast highway.
