San Diego pelagic 4 Jan: LAYSAN Albatross, Short-tld Shearwater, 25+ Brown Boobies

The six-hour special “chase trip” aboard “Legacy” out to the Nine-Mile Bank on 4 January, in hopes of re-finding Saturday’s Short-tailed Albatross, did indeed find a rare albatross, but not quite the one we had in mind. A Laysan Albatross repeatedly came into and sat next to the boat for well over 10 minutes some 12 nm W of the tip of Point Loma–at the outer edge of the Nine-Mile Bank. A bazillion photos were taken. A Short-tailed Shearwater came in behind the boat at the northeast corner of the Nine-Mile Bank, but it did not linger long. And there were plenty, plenty of Brown Boobies (25 or more?) for much of the trip, including 16 in view at once–the most any of us had seen at once off San Diego. Also 4-5 each Pink-footed and Sooty Shearwaters, which are scarce in mid-winter. Totals for the offshore waters for the half-day were:Surf Scoter 9Eared Grebe 2Pomarine Jaeger 6Parasitic Jaeger 1Bonaparte’s Gull 70Heermann’s Gull 4Western Gull 75California Gull 100Herring Gull 1Scripps’s Murrelet 5Cassin’s Auklet 5Rhinoceros Auklet 70Pacific Loon 35LAYSAN ALBATROSS 1  (32.616, -117.480)Northern Fulmar 14Pink-footed Shearwater 4Sooty Shearwater 5SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATER 1Brown Pelican 15Brown Booby 25+  (high count; but exact number difficult to determine)Brandt’s Cormorant 6–Paul Lehman, Dave Povey, Bruce Rideout, Matt Sadowski, Nancy Christensen, and all on board Legacy, San Diego
