San Diego offshore: Flesh-footed Shearwater

San Diego offshore: Flesh-footed Shearwater
By – 2:32 pm
On Saturday, 13 Nov, several folks ventured offshore as far as the 9-Mile Bank and the southeast bit of the San Diego Trough, as well as off La Jolla. Away from La Jolla there were not many birds EXCEPT for a LARGE feeding aggregation of shearwaters, jaegers, and gulls associated with lots of dolphins and a few whales (Humpbacks and a Fin) on both side of the border about 12-15 miles offshore. The clear highlight of the trip was a Flesh-footed Shearwater seen multiple times just inside Mexican waters and once in San Diego waters (14.4 miles SW of tip of Point Loma). Photographed. Other species of some note included a good mid-Nov total of ca. 70 Pink-footed Shearwaters, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 5 Northern Fulmars, 12,000 Black-vented Shearwaters, 25 Pomarine Jaegers, and 2 Common Murres. A Forster’s Tern 6.4 miles off La Jolla was farther offshore than normal.–Paul Lehman, San Diego
