San Diego Bird Festival pelagic trip, Sunday February 20
By – 5:34 am
On Sunday, 20 Feb, the San Diego Bird Festival pelagic trip to the Nine-Mile Bank area took place under pleasant sea conditions. The most unexpected bird was the continuing American X Black Oystercatcher on the Mission Bay jetties, seen as we headed out in the morning at the tip of the south jetty. Perhaps it is even slightly closer to a “true” American Oystercatcher than the recent La Jolla bird? Further study of our photographs is needed. The standout high count for the day offshore were the ca. 30 Brown Boobies. Scarce-in-winter Pink-footed and Sooty Shearwaters continued their daily appearance this week.Surf Scoter 1Pomarine Jaeger 3Scripps’s Murrelet 12Cassin’s Auklet 2Rhinoceros Auklet 3Bonaparte’s Gull 1Heermann’s Gull 8Western Gull 200California Gull 25Herring Gull 3Herring X Glaucous-winged Gull 2Royal Tern 5Red-throated Loon 1Pacific Loon 2Common Loon 3Northern Fulmar 7Pink-footed Shearwater 2Sooty Shearwater 3Black-vented Shearwater 1000Brown Booby 30Double-crested Cormorant 1Brandt’s Cormorant 7Pelagic Cormorant 1Brown Pelican 35American X Black Oystercatcher 1Surfbird 3Black Turnstone 3Paul Lehman, Dave Povey, Bruce Rideout, Tom Blackman, Pete Ginsburg, Gary Nunn, San Diego
