San Diego Bird Festival pelagic trip, Saturday February 19
By – 5:17 am
On Saturday, 19 Feb, the San Diego Bird Festival pelagic trip to the Nine-Mile Bank area took place under pleasant sea conditions. The most unexpected bird was the continuing hybrid-looking American X Black Oystercatcher on the Mission Bay jetties, seen both as we headed out and back in. Perhaps even slightly closer to a “true” American Oystercatcher than the recent La Jolla bird?? Further study of our photographs needed. High counts for the day offshore included 30 Scripps’s Murrelets, 6 Pink-footed Shearwaters (normally rather rare in winter), and 13 Brown Boobies.Brant 5Surf Scoter 2Western Grebe 6Pomarine Jaeger 4Scripps’s Murrelet 30Cassin’s Auklet 2Rhinoceros Auklet 2Bonaparte’s Gull 1Heermann’s Gull 5Western Gull 250California Gull 30Herring Gull 2Royal Tern 12Red-throated Loon 2Pacific Loon 3Common Loon 6Northern Fulmar 7Pink-footed Shearwater 6Sooty Shearwater 2Black-vented Shearwater 550Brown Booby 13Brandt’s Cormorant 20Pelagic Cormorant 1Brown Pelican 85Paul Lehman, Dave Povey, Bruce Rideout, Nancy Christensen, Pete Ginsburg, Matt Sadowski, San Diego
