Red Phalarope push

Red Phalarope push
By – 7:48 am
Wednesday morning at La Jolla there are at least 25 Red Phalaropes scattered around the ocean surface, some flying some swimming, most are still in full basic plumage but a few are starting to get a little bit of red mottling on the underparts and more yellowish color to the bill. Given how scarce the species has been locally the past couple years or more, this seems like a huge invasion. Only time will tell if this is a brief event associated with the wind the last day or so, or it portends at least a mini-incursion along the coast this month or this season.Paul Lehman, San DiegoSent from the all new AOL app for Android
