Re: WWTE 7/14 (POSSIBLE)

4:44 pm

From around 3 o’clock to 430 Rick Grove and I scoped from the end of 10th in Imperial Beach. We regularly had a small grayish tern flying east to west across pond 12, staying fairly low to the water, westbound picking at the surface regularly, and then turning back above the berm to begin a pass again. The behavior was that of the white-winged tern when I was watching it the other day, behavior and coloration was quite distinct from that of the least turns in the same pond. Visibility was horrible, no distinguishing field marks could be seen, but size, coloration, and behavior all matched that of a white-winged tern. There was no one available to confirm from inside the salt works. I believe that this bird was the white wing turn, but I could not see it clearly enough to make a positive ID. .
