We saw a Gray Flycatcher at Fort Rosecrans in 2016 and one just north of Escondido in 2021 so don’t be put off by location.  It sounds like a Gray by description and movements.I hear you about the camera.  I usually carry one now but not always.  I sometimes miss the days of birding when there were no cameras, no email, no eBird and rare bird alerts were on a recording you called into or relayed through a phone tree.  Just you on a trail with bins, friends and a guidebook!Happy birding!
