Thanks to all who participated in yesterday’s Rancho Santa Fe area Christmas Bird Count and to those who already posted their rarities.  Not all groups have reported in yet, but at least 168 species have been reported so far (past average has been 174 species with a range of 145 to 204).  Highlights include staggering numbers of American robins, and the following rarities:

Greater White-fronted Goose – continuing flock in Fairbanks Ranch/San Dieguito River Valley reported by Phil Unitt and Paul Lehman.

Snow Goose – 4 continuing in Fairbanks Ranch/San Dieguito River Valley reported by Phil Unitt and Paul Lehman; 1 at San Dieguito Reservoir reported by Tuck Russell.

Wood Duck – reported in Poway by Kirsten Winter and Jack Daynes; 3 at San Dieguito Reservoir reported by Tuck Russell.

Greater Scaup – 1 continuing female in NE San Elijo Lagoon reported by Robert Patton.

Hooded Merganser – 2 at Rancho Santa Fe Executive Golf Course reported by Paul Lehman and Peter Ginsburg.

Common Goldeneye – at Miramar Lake reported by Bruce Rideout.

Least Bittern – at Miramar Lake reported by Bruce Rideout.

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron – 4 at Del Mar Public Works/San Dieguito Lagoon reported by Joni Ciarletta, Gail DeLalla, and Robert Cuthbertson; 2 adults northwest of the nature center at San Elijo Lagoon reported by Robert Patton.

Swainson’s Hawk – in Gonzales Canyon reported by Dan King and David Trissel.

Nashville Warbler – 2 in NE Encinitas reported by Barbara Swanson.

Northern Parula – in alley off Wotan and Melba in Encinitas reported by Sue Smith and Rita Campbell.

Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warbler – in West Penasquitos Canyon reported by Jeff, Crystal, Laraina, and Lakota Spaulding.

Black-throated Gray Warbler – 2 in NE Encinitas reported by Barbara Swanson.
