Prairie Falcon?

Prairie Falcon?
By – 11:36 am
Around 9:30 this morning I was walking along Camino del Rio N., just east of Qualcomm Way, when I noticed a medium-large bird flying West directly over the SD River channel.  As I was there for non-birding purposes, I had no bins with me, but it was close enough that I could see it was dark brown on all of its top side, and grayish underneath.  I chuckled at the thought of a Prairie Falcon, as this was Mission Valley.  Then I noticed its flight pattern was woodpecker-like:  flap-flap-glide;  flap-flap-glide,  the trademark pattern of a PRFA.             When I got home I consulted SD County Bird Atlas, and p. 180 noted rare winter observations near the coast, mostly in the TJ Valley area, but none in the Mission Valley and Mission Bay areas (at least as of 2004).            I concluded such a sighting would be unlikely in Mission Valley, but not impossible.  So, does anyone know if there have been any PRFA sightings in the mid-county coastal region post-2004?  Or anywhere along the coast this fall?            If you’d like to suggest I should stop putting bourbon in my morning coffee, that’s OK too. Phil Pryde San Carlos
