Potential Inland Sanderling: Lake Henshaw 3SEP 2018
I hiked quite a bit today at Lake Henshaw and found many of the reported birds from the last 1-2 weeks, including 7 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS. One new observation is of an apparent inland SANDERLING. At the time of the SD Atlas, there were 5 records for inland SANDERLING. All 5 are of fall migrants and 3 of which were found at Lake Henshaw. There are no inland county reports in Ebird. While the bird was fairly distant, it stood out. I was able to get good scope views and some useful photos. I had to trek to the back of the lake near the stream entrance to find the shorebird flock. The birds seems to move around a bit and at times they are relatively close to the road. Distant photos are in the following ebird report.
