Pair of Mountain Chickadees , May 7, near corner of Wotan Dr. and Melba, Encinitas, CA

12:47 pm

This morning, after some shopping in Encinitas, I stopped by the Wotan/Melba alley (Encinitas Christmas count spot)  to do a quick check of that area. As I was leaving,  was surprised to see  a pair of Mountain Chickadees fly into a large cedar-like tree with gnarly trunks (33.039863, -117.265131 ) at the base of the Wotan alley here.  We have seen these  pretty regularly here during our winter Christmas Counts (first reported by Elizabeth Copper at this particular location, I think in Dec 2022).    But this seems WAY late for wintering birds to still be here. Could it be these may be one of the few low altitude MOCHs reported as possibly breeding along the coast? Maybe they are the same pair Steve Cameron reported on his property  (not too far away  from his Crest Drive property, as the chickadee flies) in June 2022 and again in July 23? After a few vocalizations, the chickadees took off for a larger pine on private property about 40-50 m to the ENE, on the north side of Melba.
