offshore San Diego Sunday (early Scripps’s Murrelets); and Painted Redstart

By – 3:55 pm
Two boats ventured offshore from San Diego on 12 December. The report from the boat I was on is highlighted by the presence of 13 Scripps’s Murrelets in the San Diego Trough between 14.7 to 22.6 nm W of Point Loma. This is very early to have this many birds already back locally, as usually the first one or two returning pairs are seen around New Year’s or soon thereafter. Also a bit of a surprise for the date or pleasing in general were the 30 Northern Fulmars (two white birds), 8 Pink-footed and 5 Sooty Shearwaters, 100 Cassin’s and 30 Rhinoceros Auklets, 7 Pomarine Jaegers, and a lofty 17 Brown Boobies. In a totally different realm, the returning for its third year Painted Redstart continued in Tierrasanta yesterday, the 11th.–Paul Lehman et al., San Diego
