offshore San Diego: Masked & Nazca Boobies, 3 late Craverie’s

4:46 pm

On Weds the 18th, several folks ventured offshore for a half day, from Mission Bay as far as the outer edge of the Nine-Mile Bank. The best bird of the foray was a cooperative sub-adult MASKED Booby some 5.2 miles west of Point Loma. In recent years this species has become much rarer in CA waters than Nazca Booby. Photos will appear in eBird lists. And speaking of Nazca Boobies, an adult was seen 15.4 miles west of Point Loma. The other clear highlight were the three Craveri’s Murrelets at two sites along the outer edge of the Nine-Mile Bank, which sets a new all-time late departure date for the county by two days. For entertainment value, two Western Grebes were swimming in the ocean some 13.5 miles west of Point Loma.
