Oceanside Christmas Bird Count 29 December 2023

3:03 pm

Hello Birding Friends,

Oceanside’s CBC on December 29th was a success, thanks to the nearly 100 participants who generously gave their time, skills, and effort. Currently, we have 194 species reported! Notable species for the day include a Rusty Blackbird, seen by John Martin (Discovery Lake, San Marcos); a Bald Eagle seen by Max Liebowitz (Agua Hedionda Creek) and later by Steve Lima (Batiquitos Lagoon); Chestnut-sided Warbler seen by Patti Koger and Kris McMillan, who joined Blanche Ramswick in seeing the Clay-colored Sparrow (north Carlsbad); and Red Crossbills, reported by Eve Martin, Rob Farber, and Charlotte Morris (south Carlsbad). Our pelagic team was not able to go out due to ocean conditions, but became a seawatch team instead, with highlights including an Ancient Murrelet, a continuing Long-tailed Duck, and a Sooty Shearwater. Final results are in the works, and will be posted soon.

Special thanks to Paul Lehman for being the MC at the compilation, to Annette Schneider and team for the delicious chili luncheon, and to Jane Mygatt for her continued advice.
