Northern Parula, Lucy's Warbler
On Saturday morning, I worked along the San Diego River between Old Town State Park and Mission Valley and had a Northern Parula and a Lucy's Warbler, as well as the more expected for early winter total of 4 Yellow Warblers, 5 Black-throated Gray Warblers and 2 Wilson's Warblers. The Parula is a male with a full chestnut breast band and it is along the south side of the river west of Mission Center Road. Easiest to park where Mission Center crosses the river at Mimi's Cafe and the Verizon store and walk west on the paved walkway several hundred yards till you get to the small off-leash fenced-in dog walking area where there is a lawn with seven or eight large cottonwood trees and several sycamores, and the bird was feeding in the cottonwoods along with yellow rumped and orange crowned and kinglet and two black-throated grays and a Wilson's. The Lucy's Warbler was in three or four skinny cottonwood trees right next to the clubhouse at the Riverwalk Golf Course, which is right off of Fashion Valley Road on the immediate north side of the river. It came into pishing along with a handful of mixed yellow rumped and orange crowned and kinglet and one Yellow warbler.
