New Years Day Pelagic

The annual SDFO New Years Day pelagic was a lovely day on the ocean. Comfortable temperatures, moderate seas and good company made the start to the new year very enjoyable. Highlights of the day included seeing 8 species of gulls (Western, California, Heerman’s, Herring, Bonaparte’s, Iceland, Ring-billed and Mew). Alcids made a light showing with one Common Murre, one pair of murrelets (probably Scripps’s) and 6 Rhinoceros Auklets. Black-vented Shearwaters were numerous, with over 1500 counted. There were two Sooty Shearwaters found with one of the more massive flocks of shearwaters. Eight Brown Boobies, one Northern Fulmar, and several Jaegers were recorded. A wonderful start to the year!

Many thanks to Dave Povey for putting this trip together, and to Barbara Carlson for handling the reservations!
