Merganser Extravaganza

Yesterday while doing the Torrey Pines Reserve bird survey, Kathy Estey and I saw 15 Red-breasted Mergansers in the Los Penasquitos Lagoon.  They were diving, darting and splashing around in a feeding frenzy in the smaller body of water to the south and were seen from Carmel Valley Road with a scope.  This is the largest number of mergansers we have ever seen in the lagoon.
