Lucy’s Warbler ; Carlsbad Premium Outlet; 16 JAN2024

3:50 pm

I observed a new LUCY’S WARBLER (LUWA) this morning at the Premium Outlet Mall in Carlsbad around 9:15. The location is here:
Last year Jeff Spaulding found a LUWA about 300 yards south of this spot near the intersection of Palomar Airport Road on Jan. 5th that stayed until February. While it may likely be the returning bird, this individual has a very distinctive white
tertial/secondary that was not seen on last year’s bird. If this is a stable leucistic feather, then this might be a different bird. If it is a molt artifact, then it may have no significance.  Nevertheless, it is an interesting looking bird. This makes Carlsbad
a LUWA hot spot this winter, with two birds currently in town. Photos are included in the following ebird report.
I’m very certain that this bird was not at this location in December, based on repeated
visits by myself and others. I’ve seen a lot of bird activity changes at my local patches in the last two weeks. Bird are still moving around!
