La Jolla cove, Nov 7 2021

An Audubon trip to the Cove this morning saw expected birds: about 350 black-vented shearwaters, 2 black oystercatchers, 1 wandering tattler, 1 pomarine and 1 parasitic jaeger, as well as loons and surf scoters. Tide was very high and most rocky shoreline was underwater. Overcast but not too foggy for a change; wind was nonexistent until about 10:30.Unusual birds included 2 greater white-fronted geese, 1 pigeon guillemot, 1 rhinoceros auklet, 1 1st-winter glaucous-winged gull, 1 brown booby, and about 35-40 Bonaparte’s gulls. One of the Cove stewards came up to us and showed us a photograph he had taken this past Tuesday of a juvenile red-footed booby that rode for all day the bow of the sportfishing boat he was on. The bird landed on the boat about 10 miles off Pt. Loma and rode back into San Diego Bay.Similar plumage to the one reported a few weeks ago on [I think it was] the BVAS pelagic trip [or maybe one of the small private boats that some birders own and take out; I don’t remember which it was], but I recall that one being a first-year, brownish red-footed booby.Stan Walens, San DiegoNov 7, 2021; 2:00 pm
