La Jolla Cove, Dec 8: BV shearwaters, common murres, ancient murrelet, laughing gull

10:04 am

A half-dozen+ people were at the Cove this morning. At first light, the ocean was smothered with black-vented shearwaters. I counted 10/second going past a transect point for maybe 30 minutes.
No way to know what the actual total of individuals was, since flocks tend to circulate in huge circles, but it certainly was 5000+.
By 8:00, there were just a few hundred at most.

Loon numbers are still dreadfully low this year. This is by orders of magnitude the smallest number of loons I’ve seen in 41 years of observation.

Fly-by highlights included 2 common murres, 1 ancient murrelet, and a 2nd-winter laughing gull.
