Juvenile Tricolored Heron off mouth of San Dieguito Lagoon, Sept 3,2020

This morning, while surveying the river mouth and ocean for the monthly San Dieguito Bird Count (early because dog beach is too crowded on weekend),  I was surprised by a beautiful juvenile TRICOLORED HERON that flew by me just beyond the surf line very close to shore, heading north.  Being a bright chestnut juvenile, it was obviously not the same bird seen and photographed by Kyle Fischer and others last June in Rose Creek, Mission Bay.  It flew by at 0830hr.   Also bobbing in the ocean off the river mouth was a tight group of 6 Common Loons, possibly newly arrived, and all preening themselves.
