Jacumba: Lark Bunting, Least Bittern, Harris’s Hawks, the Dark Lord

12:46 pm

A Saturday morning visit to Jacumba produced the continuing Lark Bunting along the very east edge of town in its usual flock of White-crowned Sparrows, the continuing pair of nesting Harris’s Hawks, and a continuing dark-lored White-crowned Sparrow at the eastern end of town. The biggest surprise was the Least Bittern in the cattail marsh at the pond (where 90+ Tricolored Blackbirds are nesting, as usual) where it was calling all morning long. This is likely the first-ever record of Least Bittern at Jacumba, although there are several older records not too far away to the west on the Campo Plateau (see Atlas).
