Franklin’s Gull and Red Crossbills

9:20 am

A Monday morning-flight check of Mount Soledad was full of optimism given the clear skies and gentle Northeast breeze, but the results were very disappointing with only about 40 migrants counted. The most numerous species were Townsend’s and Hermit Warblers, we also had an uncommon migrant Blue Grosbeak, but the clear highlight was the flock of approximately five calling Red Crossbills that went over. My friend Bill got a recording of them with his phone and we’ll see if we can determine what “type” they were.

In the “no surprise” category, the Franklin’s Gull continues at La Jolla Shores this morning, as does the indigo Bunting in the Bird & Butterfly Garden general area.
