Common Poorwill – Tecolote Canyon

Extending a thanks to John Bruin for reporting the Common Poorwill in Tecolote Canyon earlier this week.

I went this morning and heard 1 individual begin calling at 5:48 a.m., soon followed by 2 others in the approximate location reported by John. These 3 individuals were on the north side, south-facing slope of the canyon, opposite the University of San Diego dorms. At 5:57, a fourth individual called briefly in response from the south side, north-facing slope below the dorms, where John reported it. This in the area near the east end of the Battle Trail. The calls continued until about 6 a.m., when other species joined the dawn chorus. Audio to come.
