Chimney Swift at Dairy Mart Ponds 5/23/2022

Chimney Swift at Dairy Mart Ponds 5/23/2022
By – 4:34 pm
In Wednesday, May 23rd, around 3:10 I had what appeared to be a Chimney Swift flying with a group of swallows and a single White-throated Swifts over both large ponds at Dairy Mart. There was a fairly low cloud cover and most of the birds appeared to be about 60 feet up. I first noticed that the wing profile was different than a typical Vaux’s Swift’s in that there was a slight bulge midway in the trailing edge. The tail was triangular when flared, not long and forked like a WTSW, the back and rump appeared to be the same shade, and the chest and neck darker than a typical Vaux’s Swift. I watched it fly around for almost 5 minutes until all the swallows moved away and I left. As previous records of Chimney Swifts in this area have sometimes stayed for more than one day it is probably worth looking this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Dan Jehl San Diego
