Buller’s shearwater, La Jolla Cove, Jan 2, 2020
Very worn individual. Immaculate white underneath, fairly evenly dark on dorsal surface.
By 8:30 all the feeding had moved far offshore. Best time is dawn till 8:00 or so.
No idea how many black-venteds because they began circling in and out of the Cove. I’d say 4-5K minimum. Huge clouds of Bonaparte’s gulls. Maybe 200 royal terns. Hundreds of other gulls and pelicans. Didn’t bother counting scoters and loons because I was concentrating on more distant birds. Paid no attention to looking for unusual gulls. Hundreds of dolphins of 3 species. No boobies but by the time they would have arrived the frenzy was pretty far offshore.
