Balboa Park Ladder-backed Woodpecker
Birders,
At about 11:45 AM today I heard the high pitched "peak" call of a Ladder-backed Woodpecker near the entrance to the SD Zoo. I scanned the palms I was standing by and saw a woodpecker with a narrow black vertical line down the neck and much white in the cheeks and nape. I didn't have binos, and only the saw the back and head, but the vocalizations and what I saw of the plumage were consistent with Ladder-backed.The location was about halfway between the miniature railroad ticket booth and the zoo property fence, in a clump of very tall palms. It would be great to get some photographic confirmation if anyone has the opportunity.
