Baird’s Sandpiper At Salt Works Pond 20

1:13 pm

Dave Trissel found a Baird’s Sandpiper at pond 20 at approximately 8:30  AM this morning. It was initially loosely associated with snowy plovers then later more alone amongst many western sandpipers (of which there are hundreds) Pond 20 is about 1/2 mile east down the bike path from 13th Street. Unfortunately, Matt S. later reported that a Peregrine Falcon scattered the birds to other areas of the Salt Works, so the bird will have to be relocated. Regardless, the water level in Pond 20 is low with lots of exposed mud making it an ideal habitat for shore birds. Who knows what you might find.
