another cooperative American Bittern, Summer Tanagers
By {authorlink} – 12:32 pm

Sunday morning there was an American Bittern posing totally in the open, sunning itself in the cool AM temps around 8AM at a small private estate pond at the northwest corner of La Orilla Drive X El Camino Real in Rancho Santa Fe. This site is immediately east of San Elijo Lagoon and thus likely involves one of the individuals that frequents the Stonebridge area farther west at the lagoon proper. If this sunning behavior is a somewhat regular early-morning phenomenon, then it is a nice show and provides for good photo opportunities–although presumably every camera-wielding birder in San Diego County has already gone to see/photo the cooperative bird at Mission Trails Regional Park by now! To fully view this private pond, walk to the wooden gate near the beginning of the driveway.
In the Summer Tanager department, a new bird was in residential Solana Beach today, and a continuing bird was at Rohr Park in Bonita yesterday.
And continuing the “continuing” theme from yesterday, at Sweetwater Reservoir there were 138 continuing Greater White-fronted Geese, 11 continuing Cackling Geese, 1 continuing Snow Goose, 3 continuing W-f Ibis, 2 continuing adult Bald Eagles, 25 continuing Bonaparte’s Gulls, 16 continuing Canvasbacks, etc.
