Scripp’s Murrelet Continues in Oceanside

I noted the continuing Scripp’s Murrelet at 0924 just off the north end of the “T” (or “Y”) section
of the jetty that borders the boat channel leading out of the harbor in Oceanside.   Free parking is
available just east of the harbor from San Luis Rey Drive.

Nazca booby – La Jolla Seawatch

A black and white booby made a few passes by the fishermen and kayakers off seawatch at 7:35 today. It was adult plumaged and, once closer, showed a noticeably orangey base to the bill, which fits for a Nazca Booby. This was an older bird than the Masked booby seen here on June 18.

Murrelet at Oceanside Harbor

I noticed a murrelet swimming in the boat channel leading to Oceanside harbor this
morning.  I am reporting it since murrelets are not typically inshore species.  The bird 
was generally far to the north of the accessible jetty, but at one point it swam parallel to 
and just off the jetty from the “T” east nearly to the actual harbor.  Field marks (lack of  
black wedge on the breast, white chin, white mark in front of the eye) indicate a Scripp’s
Murrelet.  The bird never allowed a view of its wing linings.  I will provide photos with 
an ebird report later today.  Hopefully, some of our pelagic bird experts will weigh in on
the i.d. if they don’t actually find the bird.

Photos of a Red-necked Stint at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach were posted to the Birding Discord server a little while ago. This is a first county record. The bird was photographed at 2:50pm today at approximately 33.6985760, -118.0437676.

I received a text almost  immediately about that bird and went out and tried to find it and could not. I think it was just a one-sighting wonder,  but does sound like he’s making the rounds again.

wood stork quandary

I photographed a Wood Stork about a half-hour ago in private ponds within the Prado Basin (RIV CO). So, either ‘Woodrow’ made a hasty short-term visit to the Safari Park a week ago, or there could be a love match should these two birds meet later in the fall (mostly kidding). I obtained good photos today and could likely determine if only one bird is involved if equally good photos were taken last week in San Diego. Of course, if the Safari Park bird is still there, no comparisons are necessary.
