TWO Nelson’s Sparrows at San Elijo

TWO Nelson’s Sparrows at San Elijo

By {authorlink} – 1:28 pm

Passing on news from visiting birder Curtis Marantz today that there are TWO Nelson’s Sparrows together at the known site at San Elijo Lagoon. Seen together simultaneously. He says there is a slight difference in the boldness of the flank streaking, if one wishes to compare photos.
In other news, a singing, territorial American Robin has been present most of this month immediately to the south of the Bird & Butterfly Garden in the TRV, which is south of normal breeding areas, but where a pair was seen in late May 2018. A pair of nest-building Lark Sparrows are bordering w. Montgomery Field, which is just slightly west of the normal breeding range.

Burrowing Parakeet Palm Gone

Burrowing Parakeet Palm Gone
By {authorlink} – 11:10 am

This might be old news to some, but the dead palm tree on Cleveland Ave. in National City that the Burrowing Parakeets were excavating in over the past year or so is now gone. Not sure if there’s another place they tend to congregate, but I’m sure they’ll find a new site soon.

Sweetwater Bank Swallows, Elegant terns, Neotropic cormorant

Sweetwater Bank Swallows, Elegant terns, Neotropic cormorant
By {authorlink} – 8:55 am

Sunday morning at Sweetwater Reservoir in the overcast there are two Bank Swallows flying around with other swallows at the arm of the lake right next to the dam. But presumably once the sun breaks out they may go elsewhere. Open until 5:00 p.m. The lake will be open again tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. Very rare inland, two Elegant terns have been sitting all morning long on a buoy right off the main parking lot. And the young Neotropic Cormorant continues, sitting on the boom at the dam earlier this morning, but now has gone elsewhere with the flocks of Double cresteds. Two male Redheads and continuing Bald eagle.

Calliope Hummingbirds – Flintkote Trail

Calliope Hummingbirds – Flintkote Trail
By {authorlink} – 7:50 am

Saturday April 29, multiple Calliopes (at least one male and one female) at Flintkote trail, north of orange trail marker a few hundred yards past house where trail opens up here:  32.9131608, -117.2404618.  This spot is just a little bit north of the second location reported in Paul Mulholland’s eBird list from April 28. Birds seem to like the purple flowers. Being chased of course, by Allen’s, so never in view for long.
